General Information
Purpose of Dan River ASAP
Dan River ASAP is an offender funded program dedicated to reducing threats to transportation safety caused by the use of alcohol and their drugs in the service area of Dan River ASAP (Which includes the Cities of Danville & Martinsville, and the Counties of Pittsylvania, Franklin, Henry, & Patrick). This agency provides probation and intervention services for people referred by the courts after they are convicted of Driving Under the Influence (DUI), Boating Under the Influence (BUI), or First Offense Drug Offenses. The agency also provides intervention and probation services for people referred by the courts and/or Department of Motor Vehicles for the Driver Improvement Program or for Habitual Offender Evaluation/Intervention. This criminal justice system agency exists to serve the local communities and to network with community groups; such as courts, schools, colleges, businesses, industry, and law enforcement to increase awareness to reduce alcohol and drug abuse in our community.
Goals and Objectives
To accomplish its purpose, this ASAP is designed to achieve the goal of improving transportation safety by decreasing the incidence of driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs thus reducing the number of alcohol or other drug-related crashes.
Objectives
- To reduce the number of alcohol/drug-related crashes within the ASAP service area through more effective means of detection and deterrence of drunk drivers;
- To increase the number of arrests and convictions of persons driving under the influence;
- To increase public awareness concerning the problem related to abusive use of alcohol and other drugs as it pertains to the safe operation of motor vehicles;
- To ensure appropriate probationary control of offenders;
- To ensure the delivery of appropriate education or treatment services for offenders;
- To increase public awareness of the civil and legal consequences of DUI arrest, public perception of transportation crash risks, and public activities to reduce DUI incidents.
Dan River ASAP offers its 20-hour intensive education curriculum in Spanish also.
Special Programs
Pre-Trial Drug Screening- for court referrals with offenses involving alcohol and drugs, as a condition of their bond prior to conviction. Each referral submits to drug screens and/or breath tests until their trial date. Dan River ASAP submits a report to the court of their participation and their screening results. The cost is $25.00 for each drug screen.
Reckless/Aggressive Driving Program - This 12 hour education program for non-alcohol related charges/convictions. Participation in the program usually has charges such as reckless driving, passing on the right, driving too closely, or those driving violations that contribute to aggressive/road rage behaviors. The cost is $125.00, and pre-registration is required.
